Huawei, one of the world’s biggest phone makers, might join ZTE, Samsung with the release of foldable phones next year, which may make the phones the hot trend of 2018.

Looking back at cell phones from the past couple of years, we can see several trends emerge. The next trend we see, starting from next year, might be phones with foldable screens.

ZTE introduced the Axon M this week, a phone with two screens that fold out to form a single larger display. Samsung said it’s working to bring out a phone with a foldable display by next year. Huawei is working on its own version of foldable phone.

Speaking to CNET, the CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, said on Friday that it already has a working prototype of foldable phone. The device may be ready for release next year.

Yu added that though the company is currently working on the device, it’s not yet ready for release. He said that it could be ready as early as next year, but it needs a better, more flexible screen technology and mechanical design.

Currently, Yu said, Huawei’s foldable phone has two screens with a “small gap” between them. But Yu said they want to get rid of that gap.

“We have two screens. But we still have a small gap [between the screens]. That’s not good, and we should get rid of that gap.”

Let’s hope for better design from Huawei. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
